Mall Self-Guided Tour

Phone X.jpg

Traditional shopping malls can be disengaging and repetitive for young children, often turning a family shopping trip into a stressful experience for parents. Curious Quest is an interactive, gamified walking tour app designed to transform the physical mall environment into a collaborative playground where parents and children can bond and explore together.

Research Question

How might I leverage mobile technology to design an engaging, interactive physical activity that encourages real-world family connection within a traditional retail environment?

Solution

Curious Quest addresses parent pain points by turning a standard shopping trip into an active, hands-on scavenger hunt. Rather than isolating children behind passive screen time, the application catalyzes face-to-face family teamwork.

Key Product Features:

  • Interactive Wayfinding: A friendly, custom-illustrated fox mascot serves as an on-screen tour guide, providing intuitive route mapping and dynamic navigation from any point inside the mall ecosystem.

  • Incentivized Engagement (Gamification): Families are motivated to complete stops through a reward system consisting of collectible digital and physical stickers.

  • Inclusive Accessibility: Built with universal design principles, the application features full text-to-speech audio dialogues and multi-language support to accommodate younger children and diverse families.

Mood Board

Before entering the high-fidelity digital prototyping phase, I curated a mood board to establish an engaging, high-energy visual system tailored for young children and their parents. The aesthetic framework explores a balance between vibrant playfulness and clean UI architecture.

  • Color Psychology: The palette leans into warm, energetic oranges and friendly blues to evoke curiosity, adventure, and warmth, while steering clear of cold, clinical corporate tech colors.

  • Character & Illustration Style: Drawing inspiration from modern editorial children's book illustrations, I developed a friendly, approachable fox companion character featuring soft, rounded vector geometries to ensure a highly welcoming and non-intimidating user experience.

  • Typography & Layout: The visual exploration focused on clean, bold sans-serif typefaces that prioritize high legibility for young children learning to read, combined with organic, playful structural elements.

Logo & Sketches

sketches and ideas

The design process began with rapid, low-fidelity sketching to explore diverse visual concepts for the app's interface and mascot character. Mapping out structural wireframes on paper allowed me to experiment with screen real estate, button placements, and navigation flows before committing to digital tools. Concurrently, I sketched various animal concepts for the tour guide companion, testing different expressions and postures to find a character that felt both adventurous and deeply comforting to young children.

Deliverables

The final interactive screens translate user insights and research into a polished, high-fidelity mobile application. By focusing on intuitive layouts and high contrast, the user interface remains effortlessly readable for parents on the move while capturing the attention of children.

  • Gamified Quest Dashboard: The interface relies on a clean, grid-based card layout that lets families instantly see their current quest progress, active challenges, and earned sticker rewards at a single glance.

  • Mascot-Driven Wayfinding: The custom fox mascot is seamlessly integrated directly into the navigation screens, transforming a standard map interface into an interactive storybook guide.

  • Accessible UI Components: Buttons use oversized, touch-friendly hit areas with clear visual depth, making them highly usable in a busy, real-world retail environment where physical distractions are constant.

  • Inclusive Audio & Language Accessibility: To accommodate pre-literate children and diverse families, the interface integrates full text-to-speech voiceovers for all mascot dialogue, alongside instant multi-language toggles that adapt the user experience seamlessly.

To bridge the gap between physical space and digital adoption, I designed high-visibility promotional posters placed at key mall entrance points. The marketing strategy utilizes targeted reward psychology—highlighting the physical sticker collection system to build curiosity—paired with a direct QR code placement for frictionless user onboarding.
